Course description

Cell organelles are small structures inside the cell that perform specific functions necessary for the survival and proper functioning of the cell. Each organelle has a unique role. For example, the nucleus controls all the activities of the cell and contains genetic material (DNA). The mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they produce energy. Ribosomes help in making proteins, while the endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough) transports materials within the cell. The Golgi apparatus packages and distributes proteins. Lysosomes are the cleaning agents that break down waste. In plant cells, chloroplasts help in photosynthesis, and the vacuole stores water and other substances. All these organelles work together to keep the cell alive and functioning properly.
